Spiritual Gifts Series: Discovering God’s Design for You

Have you ever wondered why you’re passionate about certain kinds of service in the church—but not others? Or why some things come naturally to you while others feel like a struggle? The answer might lie in your spiritual gifts—God-given abilities designed to equip you for ministry and build up the body of Christ.

In this post, we’ll explore what spiritual gifts are, who gives them, why they matter, and how you can begin to discover yours.

What Are Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts are supernatural abilities given by the Holy Spirit to every believer. They are not talents we’re born with or skills we acquire over time (though God can use those too!). Instead, they’re special empowerments to serve others in ways that reflect Christ’s heart and mission.

“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”
1 Corinthians 12:7

Who Gives the Gifts?

The source of all spiritual gifts is the Holy Spirit. Scripture makes it clear that these gifts are not earned or chosen, but graciously given by God:

“All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.”
1 Corinthians 12:11

Every believer receives at least one gift, and often a combination. This means you are gifted by God for a purpose—no exceptions!

What’s the Purpose of Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts are never meant to be hoarded or hidden—they’re meant to be used! Their ultimate goal is to bring glory to God and strengthen His people.

  • To Build Up the Church

“…to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.”
    Ephesians 4:12

  • To Glorify God

“If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.”
    1 Peter 4:11

  • To Bring Unity and Maturity

... until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”
    Ephesians 4:13

Every Believer Has a Role

The Apostle Paul used the analogy of a body to describe the church. Just as every part of the body has a unique function, so does every member of Christ’s body.

“If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?... But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.”
1 Corinthians 12:17–18

You may not be called to preach or sing, but maybe you’re gifted in hospitality, service, or leadership. Each gift is equally valuable and absolutely necessary.

How Can You Discover Your Spiritual Gifts?

Here are a few ways to begin exploring how God has uniquely gifted you:

  1. Pray — Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your gifts and guide you into opportunities to use them.

  2. Study Scripture — Familiarize yourself with the main passages on spiritual gifts:
    1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 4, 1 Peter 4.

  3. Use a Spiritual Gifts Inventory — Tools like ours can help identify patterns in your passions and strengths.

  4. Serve and Experiment — Step into different roles and pay attention to what energizes you.

  5. Ask Others — Trusted friends and mentors often see things in us that we don’t.

You Are Gifted for a Reason

You are not an accident in the body of Christ. Your presence matters, and your gifts are needed. Whether you lead, teach, encourage, give, serve, or pray—your part in God’s mission is vital.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
1 Peter 4:10

The Scarlet Thread: Tracing Jesus Through the Old Testament

The Bible is not just a collection of disconnected stories—it is a unified narrative, telling the story of God's redemptive plan from Genesis to Revelation. One of the most fascinating aspects of Scripture is how the Old Testament foreshadows Jesus Christ in remarkable ways. This “scarlet thread” of redemption weaves through the Bible, revealing Jesus long before His birth in Bethlehem. Many believers focus on Jesus' life and ministry in the New Testament, but the Old Testament is filled with shadows and symbols pointing to Him. By recognizing these connections, we gain a deeper understanding of God's plan and a greater appreciation for the consistency of Scripture. 1. Jesus in Creation Most people associate Jesus’ work with the cross, but did you know that He was present at creation? John 1:1-3 tells us that Jesus (the Word) was with God in the beginning and that "through Him all things were made." Paul confirms this in Colossians 1:16, saying that "all ...
