If you asked ten people to describe God, you’d likely get ten different answers—some biblical, some cultural, some shaped by pain, and some shaped by wishful thinking. That’s one reason studying the attributes of God matters so much: we don’t get to “create” God in our image. We learn who he is by listening to what he has revealed about himself in Scripture.
The attributes of God aren’t abstract theology for scholars only. They’re the bedrock of real faith. When you’re anxious, God’s sovereignty steadies you. When you feel guilty, his holiness and mercy keep you from cheap grace and crushing despair. When life feels unfair, his justice assures you that evil will not win. What you believe about God will shape how you pray, how you endure suffering, how you resist temptation, and how you worship.
This blog series will walk through key attributes of God—his holiness, love, justice, mercy, sovereignty, faithfulness, omniscience, omnipresence, and more—with Scripture as our authority. My goal is simple: to help you see God more clearly, trust him more deeply, and live more steadily.
Key Scriptures to Start With
-
Exodus 34:6–7 – God proclaims his own character: merciful, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, yet just.
-
Isaiah 6:1–5 – God’s holiness exposes our sin and awakens true reverence.
-
Psalm 145:8–9 – God’s goodness and compassion extend to all his works.
-
James 1:17 – God does not change; his character is steady when life is not.
A Simple Framework for Studying God’s Attributes
As you read Scripture in this series, try this pattern:
-
Observe: What does the text say God is like?
-
Interpret: What does that mean in context (and in the whole Bible)?
-
Apply: How should this change my worship, thinking, choices, and fears?
Reflection Questions
-
Which attribute of God feels easiest for you to believe right now? Which feels hardest?
-
Where are you most tempted to judge God’s character by your circumstances?
-
How would your prayers change if you truly believed God is both holy and merciful?

Next, we’ll start where Scripture so often starts: God’s holiness—why it’s beautiful, why it’s terrifying apart from grace, and why it’s essential for understanding the cross.
